Mihara port - Rabbit(Okuno) island 2 ways

[From Mihara Port to Rabbit Island – Okunoshima]

Just a 5-minute walk from JR Mihara Station, which is accessible by Shinkansen, lies Mihara Port. From here, a high-speed ferry takes you directly to Okunoshima, better known as Rabbit Island.

The island’s circumference is about 4 km. It takes around 50 minutes to walk or about 20 minutes to circle by bicycle (rental bikes are available on the island). But don’t be surprised if it takes longer—dozens of friendly rabbits will charm you into stopping along the way.

[More Than Cute Rabbits – A Place of History]

Okunoshima also carries a deeper history. During World War II, the island was a center for poison gas production. Remnants such as storage facilities, a power plant, and gun batteries remain, and the local museum provides insight into this past.

The island contrasts its bright, tranquil nature with the somber memories of war. This balance gives Okunoshima a unique appeal and significant historical value.
